Cabinet spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun said Monday that Premier Jiang Yi-huah has agreed to meet with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu over the future of the city’s petrochemical industry.
The meeting is set to take place at 3:30 pm on Friday, Taiwan Time.
Chen requested a meeting with Jiang after a series of gas explosions ripped across parts of Kaohsiung on the night of July 31, killing 30 and injuring more than 300. The authorities have determined that leaking propylene in underground pipes was responsible. The incident has thrust issues of safety in the petrochemical industry into the spotlight.
Sun, the cabinet spokesperson, said that it is not yet clear if Chen and Jiang will discuss the possibility of moving Kaohsiung’s petrochemical plants to a specially designated area during their meeting.
