A British national who fled Taiwan after being convicted in a fatal hit-and-run case has appealed a court ruling on his extradition.
In an appeal filed by his lawyer on Thursday, Zain Dean argued that his trial in Taiwan was unfair. He also said serving time in a Taiwanese prison would put his life in danger.
The appeal will be heard in a higher court in Edinburgh, where Dean resided before being detained last year. No dates have been set for the trial.
Dean was head of a British company’s office in Taiwan. He was sentenced to four years in prison in July 2012 for killing a newspaper deliveryman while driving under the influence of alcohol. Dean used a friend’s passport to flee Taiwan the following month.
In June, the Edinburgh Sheriff Court ruled that Dean should be extradited to Taiwan to serve his sentence.
