Deputy Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chang Hsien-yao says that his organization will make Taiwanese students studying in Mainland China a priority in the future. The MAC is the government’s top China policy-maker.

Chang was speaking Wednesday at a conference on issues affecting Taiwanese students pursuing higher education in Mainland China. Chang said that it is important to pay attention to students’ issues because young people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait will determine the future direction of cross-strait relations.

Chang said that the government will focus on four issues affecting Taiwanese students: education, students’ daily needs, channels for emergency contact, and employment.

Chang said the government will also work to expand recognition of degrees earned in Mainland China. It will also work to ensure Taiwanese studying in Mainland China are covered by medical insurance, establish a mechanism for handling inquiries and emergencies, and ensure that those studying in the Mainland can find work after graduation.

Chang said that the government will work with major Taiwanese investors in the Mainland to give Taiwanese studying in the Mainland top priority when looking to fill important positions.
