More than half of the nearly five million tourists who have come to Taiwan so far this year were from China. That’s according to the latest figures from the Interior Ministry.
The ministry said that in the first six months of this year, about 54% of tourists came from China, followed by 16.2% from Japan, and 5.5% from South Korea. The tourist arrivals from China included people traveling from Hong Kong and Macau.
Tourism has been the top reason for visiting Taiwan so far this year, with 72.3% of all arrivals coming here to travel. That’s an increase of about 36.2% over last year. Business arrivals accounted for 8.1%.
As for the most popular travel destinations for Taiwanese travelers headed overseas, 48.8% headed to China, while 25.3% went to Japan.
