Panama Canal contract dispute will not impact Taiwanese gas imports

Panama’s minister in charge of canal affairs, Roberto Roy, says that disputes with contractors expanding the Panama Canal will not affect Taiwanese imports of American liquefied gas.

Roy made the comments during a meeting with Taiwan’s ambassador to Panama, Chou Lin, on Tuesday. Roy said that the dispute will be resolved through international arbitration. He said that progress on the expansion of the canal will continue according to plan.

President Ma Ying-jeou had expressed concerns that the dispute with contractors might impact imports of American liquefied gas, which is transported via the canal during his visit to Panama in July.

Roy said that Taiwanese imports of liquefied gas can continue as normal during the expansion process, which is expected to be completed in March 2016.
