Comprehensive review to be conducted on all underground pipelines: Premier
Premier Jiang Yi-huah

A comprehensive review will be conducted on all underground petrochemical pipelines in Taiwan. That’s the word from Premier Jiang Yi-huah on Monday.

A series of gas explosions in the southern city of Kaohsiung killed 28 and injured 302 people on July 31st. Faulty underground pipes are thought to have led to a propylene leak, causing the explosions. The premier said that a comprehensive review of all the pipelines in Taiwan will be conducted soon.

“Under my instructions, the Central Emergency Operation Center led by Vice Premier Mao Chi-kuo has invited a dozen experts in the field to discuss the safety of all the underground pipelines in our country," said Jiang. "They are not only going to figure out what went wrong in Kaohsiung but also come up with a comprehensive plan to conduct reviews on all the underground pipelines in every city and county.”

The premier said the government’s disaster management has improved over the years. The efficiency, organization, and speed of disaster relief efforts have seen great improvement because the government has learned from past experiences of dealing with disasters such as typhoons.
