Military continues safety checks in aftermath of Kaohsiung blasts

Chemical detection troops will continue to monitor leaking gas and search for survivors of a series of deadly explosions in the city of Kaohsiung.

The defense ministry made the remarks on Sunday in an updated statement on its rescue efforts. Nearly 2,000 servicemen are scheduled to be deployed Sunday in rescue operations at the scenes of the explosions, bringing the total number of servicemen dispatched to 5,567.

Also on Sunday, 22 ambulances, three chemical-detection vehicles, 13 excavators, 26 life detecting monitors and other equipment are being used in the rescue mission.
