Taiwanese left-handed pitcher Wei-yin Chen won his fifth consecutive game and his record-tying 12th game of the season Friday. He dedicated the victory to the people of his hometown Kaohsiung, which was rocked by massive gas explosions a day earlier.
The 29-year-old led the Baltimore Orioles to a 2-1 win at home over the Seattle Mariners. Chen told reporters through an interpreter that he would like to send out his best wishes to the people of his hometown.
Friday marked Chen’s second dominant start against Seattle in just over a week. In his previous outing on July 24, Chen pitched eight scoreless innings in a 4-0 win.
Chen has won five straight outings, which is a new record for him. He also matched his Major League high in victories in a single season. His record was 12-11 in 2012, when he made his debut in the Major League.
