Examination completed on 2 black boxes from TransAsia crash

The Aviation Safety Council (ASC) has completed the examination of the 2 black boxes from the TransAsia Airways plane crash. Flight GE222 crashed in the outlying county of Penghu on July 23, killing 48 and injuring 10 people.

The ASC said on Monday that the two black boxes that record the flight data and cockpit voices were badly damaged. But the council has managed to complete the examination of the data in the two recorders and will make the information public as soon as possible.

The ASC said getting the information from the black boxes took time because the data in the boxes had to be synchronized with data from the air traffic control tower, radar, and global positioning systems during the crucial minutes before the accident.

Meanwhile, the council met with foreign aviation experts on Monday to examine wreckage from the plane and discuss the progress made in the investigation. The experts include officials from the French authority responsible for investigating civil aviation accidents, the manufacturer of the ATR-72 that crashed, and engine provider Pratt & Whitney Canada.

The council is expected to submit an initial report on the plane crash to the International Civil Aviation Organization in late August.
