Trade liberalization is taking center stage in the National Conference on Economic and Trade Affairs.
The conference held by the government took place in Taipei on Sunday. It explores the issue of Taiwan’s economic development in a globalized world and strategies for regional economic integration and trade with China.
During the conference, a representative from the machinery industry, Wang Cheng-ching, voiced his concerns about an imminent free trade agreement between China and South Korea. He also called on the government to speed up negotiations with China on similar pacts.
National Development Council Minister Kuan Chung-ming said although many people are supportive of trade liberalization, they are worried that this will bring Taiwan too close to China. Kuan said the government will take into account public opinion when devising policies.
