Typhoon Matmo is currently east of the Philippines and moving northwestward on a path that could see it strike Taiwan as soon as Wednesday. The Central Weather Bureau said on Monday that Matmo is expected to intensify over the next few days.

The storm was centered some 950 km southeast of Taiwan early Monday, moving in a northwestwardly direction at 24 km per hour.

The bureau is planning to issue a sea warning Monday evening and a land warning early Tuesday.

Matmo is expected to bring rain and wind to Taiwan midweek, and depending on the exact track, it could be the first typhoon to make landfall in Taiwan this year. The bureau also cautioned that large waves caused by the outer band of the storm will reach the coast of northern and eastern Taiwan on Tuesday.
