Sea warning against Typhoon Matmo expected Monday

The Central Weather Bureau says it plans to issue a sea warning for Typhoon Matmo on Monday.

Bureau officials said Sunday that the storm was centered at some 1,400 kilometers southeast of Taiwan in the early afternoon, moving in a northwestward direction at up to 21 kilometers per hour.

The bureau said keeping on that tract, Matmo will reach the sea around Taiwan on Monday, and the bureau plans to issue a sea warning Monday night.

However, the bureau is not certain whether the storm will strike Taiwan. It said high pressure on the Pacific could strengthen in the next couple of days and push the storm southward, which will spare Taiwan. But the bureau also said a land warning may be issued on Tuesday.

The bureau warned that large waves caused by the outer band of the storm will reach the coast of northern and eastern Taiwan on Tuesday.
