First lady Chow Mei-ching was in Estonia Wednesday as honorary leader of the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra was invited by the organizer of the music festival there to perform in Estonia’s second largest city, Tartu.
At the closing reception Chow presented a batch of Chinese language learning materials to Tartu University on behalf of Taiwan. The university has an Eastern studies and research center and offers sinology courses taught using traditional Chinese characters.
After Estonia, the orchestra’s tour continued on to Latvia and Finland. It is the eighth time that the orchestra has been invited to perform in Europe and the first time accompanied by the first lady.
