President Ma Ying-jeou received a delegation of Paraguayan Senators on Wednesday.
During his meeting with the senators, Ma called Paraguay Taiwan’s most faithful ally. The two countries have enjoyed unbroken relations for more than 57 years. The country is Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in South America.
Ma noted the frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries in recent years. Ma himself has visited Paraguay on two occasions since taking office.
He also discussed academic exchanges between the two countries. In 2004, Taiwan began offering scholarships for Paraguayan students. Taiwan later added additional scholarships for Chinese language students.
President Ma said that more than 100 Paraguayan students are now studying in Taiwan. He said he hopes that more Taiwanese students will go to study in Paraguay in the future.
