Prehistoric jade artifact excavated in southern Taiwan

A prehistoric jade artifact said to be 2,500 years old has been found at an archeological site in Tainan, southern Taiwan.

The National Museum of Prehistory said on Wednesday that the zoo-anthropomorphic jade artifact is an important discovery. The museum said the jade piece is about 8cm long and 2cm wide. It is made of nephrite, a type of jade found in eastern Taiwan.

The museum said what is special about this piece is that it shows a single human figure, and although the head is indistinct, it seems to show a hair bun or a hat. According to the museum, an artifact depicting a single human has never been discovered in Tainan. A researcher with the museum said the discovery of such a rare artifact shows that the area where it was found was politically or economically important.
