On this day in 1923, the British parliament passed a law banning the sale of alcohol to people under the age of 18.

On this day in 1930, the first World Cup football tournament was held in Montevideo, Uruguay, with 13 countries participating.

On this day in 1947, Europe accepted the Marshall Plan, which was aimed at aiding European economic recovery after World War II. The plan was devised by then-US Secretary of State George Marshall.

And on this day in 1965, the British House of Commons abolished the death penalty.
