US website announces Taiwan world’s second-safest country
World No. 2

US website Lifestyle9.com has placed Taiwan second on its list of the world’s safest countries. The website created the list based on data from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Taiwan came second only to Japan in the rankings.

The website took crime, natural disasters, corruption, and economic factors into consideration in compiling the list. Taiwan scored well with a low crime rate variable of 16.26 and a high safety rate variable of 83.74.

In its assessment, Lifestyle9.com noted Taiwan’s low rate of violent crime and robbery as well as the readiness of Taiwanese people to help foreign travelers without being asked. The website noted that foreign travelers to Taiwan feel safe, and that female travelers can feel safe going out at night.

Deputy Interior Minister Chen Chwen-jing responded to the rankings on Wednesday.

"The results of our hard work have been recognized. The National Immigration Agency has cooperated with the US on counter-terrorism," said Chen. "Experts sent from the US have also confirmed that we are among the best when it comes to preventing human trafficking. These are the results of our hard work over the past few years," he said.
