Inflation in Taiwan rises 1.64% in June
CPI up 1.64%

Taiwan’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.64% in June from a year earlier. That’s according to figures released by the government statistics office on Tuesday.

The office said the reason for the increase was a rise in food prices, including the price of eggs, meat, seafood and fruit. The price of dining out also reached its highest point in 65 months.

The statistics office’s Deputy Director Tsai Yu-tai said that while consumer prices are stable, certain types of price increases have made an impact.

“Overall, consumer prices are stable," said Tsai. The main reason [for the increase] is that the price of goods you buy once a month rose 2.71%, while the price of goods you buy once a season rose 3.25%. The average cost of eating out went up by 3.96%. So the rise in the price of these items has made quite an impact on the public.”

The cost of dining out alone has risen more than 3% in the last three months. Tsai said the reasons for the jump include higher electricity and food costs.
