KMT sets agenda for extra legislative session

The ruling party, the Kuomintang (KMT) says it will put into vote the approval of Control Yuan nominees in the second extra legislative session.

The Control Yuan is one of the five branches of government in Taiwan. It is also the top government watchdog. Opposition parties are unhappy about President Ma Ying-jeou’s list of nominees, saying that the nominees are simply being rewarded with the positions as political favors. Opposition lawmakers also blocked voting on the nominees, ending the first extra legislative session on Friday.

The KMT said on Saturday that the approval of the nominees will be the first item on the agenda in the second extra session that starts on July 28. The party also said a bill on free economic pilot zones is likely to be included on the agenda.

KMT caucus whip Lin Hung-chih said priority will be given to “important bills”. He also criticized the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), saying that the party is unwilling to even discuss the free economic pilot zones.

In response, the DPP said the free economic pilot zones have a far-reaching impact on Taiwan. It also said such a controversial bill should be discussed in the regular session.
