President Ma Ying-jeou arrived in El Salvador on Wednesday on the second leg of his current Central America trip. Ma met with El Salvador’s President Salvador Sanchez Ceren. They signed joint communiques and presented medals to each other.
Ma commented on the bilateral cooperation projects that the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan has with the Central American ally.
"The ROC has maintained diplomatic relations with El Salvador for 81 years," said Ma.
"There are various successful projects on agricultural technology, vocational training and medical and healthcare currently underway. The purpose of this trip is to exchange views on bilateral issues with President Sanchez Ceren," he said.
Meanwhile, President Sanchez Ceren thanked the ROC for the many bilateral cooperation projects from 2009 to 2014 that contributed to El Salvador’s five-year development plan. He said he hopes that Ma’s visit will further strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The two heads of state have also decided to set up a committee on the implementation of a free trade agreement between the two countries. Both presidents said the two countries maintain stable diplomatic ties.
