The foreign ministry has arranged a meeting with Sao Tome and Principe’s President Manuel Pinto da Costa in July. The purpose is to find out about the leader’s recent trip to China.
The visit caused a stir in Taiwan, since the African nation holds official ties with the Republic of China on Taiwan, instead of with the People’s Republic of China.
Foreign ministry official Wang Chien-yeh told a press conference on Thursday that Taiwan’s ambassador to Sao Tome and Principe will meet with Pinto da Costa.
During his China visit, Pinto da Costa sent an official to explain to Taiwan that the trip was to solicit investment in the African country’s deep water harbor. The official said that the visit was not political in nature.
