All 19 nominees by President Ma Ying-jeou for members of the Examination Yuan have been approved by the legislature.
The Examination Yuan is one of the five branches of government in Taiwan. It is the highest authority in charge of the examination and management of all civil service personnel.
The legislature voted to approve all the nominees on Friday, even though lawmakers have different views on whether the government body should continue to exist in the first place. Taiwan’s opposition parties believe the agency’s functions are limited and can be dealt with by other government branches. They also say the existence of the Examination Yuan is a waste of taxpayers’ money. However, the nominations were still approved because the ruling party holds a majority in the legislature. Two opposition parties boycotted the vote.
