Government to hold national energy conference
Breakfast meeting held by Premier Jiang Yi-huah

Premier Jiang Yi-huah says the government will hold a national energy conference to discuss the future of energy use in Taiwan. Jiang was speaking Tuesday during a meeting with business and industrial leaders.

Taiwan has yet to reach a consensus on energy resources. The premier said it will be important to map out a policy if the fourth nuclear power plant is unable to start commercial operations.

“In the past, we always presumed that the fourth nuclear power plant, once successfully in operation, would be able to meet our energy needs after the other three nuclear plants are decommissioned," said Jiang.

"But if the fourth nuclear power plant is not able to start commercial operations, how are we going to develop other energy sources? It’s the government’s responsibility to supply stable and inexpensive electricity to the public. But what will be the possible framework for our future energy policies?”

Meanwhile, Jiang said that society must find common ground on other key issues, such as Taiwan’s bid to participate in regional trade bodies, as well as cross-strait trade ties.

Jiang also called on the opposition not to take a negative view of the free economic pilot zones proposed by the government. The pilot project is crucial to Taiwan’s future.
