The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is calling on China to release all prisoners of conscience.
DPP Secretary-General Joseph Wu made the call on Wednesday in a press conference commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing. The event is also known as the June Fourth Incident.
“We don’t just care about ourselves; we also want to see the Chinese people enjoying the same freedoms, democracy, and human rights as people in Taiwan" said Wu. "I would like to call again on the Chinese government to face up to the June Fourth Incident, release all prisoners of conscience, stop human rights violations, and follow a civilized code of conduct”
During the press conference, DPP spokesperson Hsu Chia-ching also responded to President Ma Ying-jeou’s statement on the June Fourth Incident. She said the tone of the statement is strong compared with his statements on the incident over the past six years. But she urged Ma to take a tougher stance on human rights issues in China.
