Democracy and human rights activists are calling on the Taiwanese to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre. Their call came on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident.

Student activist Henry Kwok is part of a group promoting democracy in China. He spoke on why it’s important for the Taiwanese to support the campaign for human rights in China.

"That’s because it also protects the hard-won [democracy] that the Taiwanese have strived for in the past century. Our common goal is to let the Chinese regime know that civic society in Taiwan is firmly against totalitarianism,” said Kwok.

Political scientist Yeh Hao said Taiwan’s democracy has been shaken by China’s growing clout in Asia.

"When facing threats from a closed and despotic country like China, Taiwan’s democratic values have been gradually shunted aside. The ‘China factor’ could pose a threat to our democracy, both politically and economically,” said Yeh.
