Taiwan works with US to combat human trafficking

Taiwan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United States to combat human trafficking and slavery. That’s the word from the National Immigration Agency (NIA) on Friday.

This MOU is the first of its kind signed by Washington with a country in the Asia Pacific. The United States has signed similar memorandums with Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and the European Union.

The NIA said the conclusion of the agreement indicates Washington’s recognition of Taiwan’s efforts to prevent international human trafficking. Over the years, Taiwan has been working with Mongolia, Indonesia, Honduras, Vietnam, Paraguay, and China to end human trafficking. Taiwan has also been listed as one of the Tier 1 countries whose governments fully comply with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. Taiwan has held this status in the US State Department’s annual “Trafficking in Persons Report” since 2010.
