Vice President Wu Den-yih met with Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty on Friday during his visit to Taiwan. Wu said he was happy to welcome Shetty to Taiwan and is interested in listening to any suggestions he has about protecting human rights in the country.
Wu said that Taiwan values human rights. The government established a human rights committee that released a report on Taiwan in 2012. In 2013, it invited global experts to Taiwan to look at the state of human rights in the country. Wu expressed his gratitude for global support for Taiwan’s efforts to protect human rights.
Though Taiwan is not a member of the UN, it has ratified two human rights covenants. In 2009, the legislature ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
