Republic of China is the "China" in "one China policy"

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said that the "China" in the "one China Policy" is a reference to the Republic of China, which is the official name of Taiwan. That's in contrast to the "People's Republic of China", which is based in Beijing.

The comments from Taiwan's top China policymaking body came on Wednesday. They followed remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who said he is willing to negotiate with Taiwan under the "one China" framework. The Mainland Chinese perspective is that Taiwan is part of "one China" ruled from Beijing.

MAC spokeswoman Wu Mei-hung explains Taiwan's perspective.

"Be it the 'one China framework', the 'one China principle', or the 'one China concept', the government's stance remains the same, that is, the 'China' in 'one China' is the 'Republic of China'," said Wu.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday brought up the possibility of meeting with his Taiwanese counterpart – President Ma Ying-jeou. That was during a closed door meeting with Lien Chan, the honorary chairman of Taiwan's ruling party – the Kuomintang (KMT).

The MAC said that the two leaders should meet at an appropriate time, at an appropriate occasion, under appropriate conditions and using appropriate titles. The council said the meeting should also enhance the Taiwanese people's well-being and cross-strait development.

The MAC has said that the APEC forum is the most appropriate venue for the leaders to meet.
