The recent election in the European Parliament will not affect Taiwan-Europe relations. That’s the word from the foreign ministry official in charge of European affairs, Chang Ming-zhong on Thursday.
Chang said that the European Parliament plays an important role in Taiwan-Europe relations. He said several parliamentarians that support Taiwan have been re-elected. Chang said Taiwan’s foreign ministry will continue to maintain good rapport with the newly elected members.
“There are some members that support strengthening relations between Taiwan and The European Union. We will continue to use the ongoing work basis in keeping in touch with every party [in the European Parliament] and building good work relations.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Wu Den-yih said he hopes that Taiwan and the EU will build closer relations and that Taiwan and Italy can sign an economic cooperation agreement. He also said that he hopes the two countries will work out a double taxation avoidance agreement soon to promote trade on both sides.
