Head of Formosa Plastics calls for quick punishment of Vietnam rioters

Chairman of Formosa Plastics, William Wang, has called for Vietnam to punish those responsible for damaging the property of foreign firms during riots earlier in the month.

Wang was speaking Tuesday during a meeting with Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Huong.

Formosa Plastics facilities in two Vietnamese provinces suffered heavy damage during the riots. Rioters upset at China’s attempts to set up an oil rig in disputed waters targeted businesses with Chinese-language signs, causing significant damage to a number of Taiwanese-owned facilities.

During the meeting, Minister Vu delivered a letter from Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung. The letter expressed Vietnam’s support for foreign firms investing in the country.

Meanwhile, Formosa Plastics says that 90% of its operations in Vietnam have returned to normal.
