Taiwan 11th most expensive location for expats in Asia-Pacific region

Taiwan ranks as the 11th most expensive place in the Asia-Pacific region for people with expatriate salary packages. That’s according to a new survey by a London-based HR consulting firm ECA International.

The group’s latest MyExpatriate Market Pay Survey shows that companies sending middle managers to Taiwan provide packages worth an average of US$233,000 per year.

That’s lower than Tokyo -- the most expensive Asian location -- as well as Hong Kong, Singapore and some tier-one cities in China. But the figure for Taiwan is slightly higher than many tier-two Chinese cities.

The firm’s regional director for Asia, Lee Quane, said that for companies looking to set up regional operations, Taiwan is a more cost-effective alternative to the big cities in China.

A salary package for an expatriate middle manager in Japan is worth an average of US$379,000 per year. But Japan also has a high cost of living and high taxes.
