The foreign ministry is keeping close watch on the situation in Thailand after that country declared martial law on Tuesday. The martial law is in place to deal with months of unrest and protests by the opposition against the Thai government.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Anna Kao said no Taiwanese nationals in Thailand have been affected so far.

“The Thai military declared martial law at 3:00 [on Tuesday] morning. Our representative office has already launched an emergency response mechanism," said Kao. "Currently, we know that our nationals are not affected, but we will keep close tabs on the situation.”

Kao said that the representative office will keep close contact with nationals in Thailand. The foreign ministry also urged anyone visiting or residing there to be alert. The ministry has not yet issued a travel alert for travelers to the country.

Meanwhile, the economics ministry said Taiwanese companies there are operating as usual and the ministry is keeping a close watch over them.
