US praises Taiwan’s obesity prevention efforts

Taiwan’s Minister of Health and Welfare Chiu Wen-ta met with US Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius on Monday.

The two met for twenty minutes on the sidelines of the first day of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva. They discussed Taiwan’s progress on obesity prevention and encouraging breastfeeding. It was the fourth time the two health ministers have met. Chiu expressed gratitude for Sebelius’ support of Taiwan joining the WHA and for saying in 2011 that no UN organization can unilaterally decide Taiwan’s status.

Chiu also thanked her for US aid in Taiwan’s efforts to fight rabies and H7N9 and for US praise and concern of Taiwan’s anti-obesity efforts. Chiu invited the US official to attend a global health forum in Taiwan in November.

Taiwan’s delegation is attending the WHA as an observer. Chiu said he plans to meet with 30 national representatives this year.
