Taiwan congratulates BJP for Indian general election victory
India's next prime minister

The foreign ministry has issued a statement to congratulate India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for winning the country’s general election, which made its leader Narendra Modi the next prime minister.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the foreign ministry said Taiwan also congratulated the Indian government on holding a successful election in the world’s biggest democracy.

The ministry said bilateral ties between Taiwan and India are strong, and the two sides are cooperating in areas ranging from trade and technology to education and culture. The ministry said its hopes the two sides will continue to strengthen cooperation.

Official results show that Modi’s party, the BJP, won over half of the parliamentary seats in the May 12 election. The BJP’s victory brings to an end the Indian National Congress party’s years-long rule of India.
