43% of working moms would rather stay single, childless

Forty-three percent of working moms in Taiwan would rather be single and childless if they could choose again. That’s the word from a job bank survey on Friday.

The government statistics office said that women make up more than half of the workforce in Taiwan. But the survey showed that working moms are under tremendous pressure because they have to balance work and family.

Salary levels are also much lower for women who leave the job market. There is a NT$ 15,000 (over US$ 500) per month gap between women who come back to the job market and those who never left. The reason for the pay gap is that working moms usually can’t work long hours.
