KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin said that Hung Hsiu-chu will become the KMT’s next presidential candidate if public support for her candidacy reaches 30%.
Hung Hsiu-chu currently serves as Vice President of the legislature. She is the only KMT party member currently eligible to run in next year’s election. Unlike former health minister Yang Chih-liang, Hung was able to gain the 15,000 party member signatures required for nomination.
KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin said that the next step in Hung’s nomination process will be gaining 30% public support.
Hau said the KMT is going by the books in nominating its presidential candidate. If there are any problems during this process, the central standing committee has to give its approval before the party can use any other nomination method.
The KMT says it will formally announce its candidate on July 19.
