Health Minister Chiang Been-huang met with US Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Matthews Burwell on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva.
Chiang told Burwell that Taiwan wants to join more international public health organizations and is willing to offer assistance to help contain epidemic outbreaks. Chiang said he believes the US is supportive of Taiwan’s efforts to join international health bodies.
This is the seventh year that Taiwan has been invited to attend the WHA, though Taiwan is not a member of the World Health Organization (WHO). The event, which kicked off Monday, is focused on the prevention of contagious diseases and the Ebola crisis that struck West Africa last year.
Representatives from Taiwan are also set to meet with health officials from a dozen countries including China, Japan and Australia.
