The foreign ministry says it found the joint statement between China and Belarus regrettable.
Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the statement with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus on Sunday to deepen strategic partnerships. The statement says Belarus is opposed to Taiwan independence and Taiwan’s participation in any international organizations that require “statehood.” Belarus also pledged not to establish official ties with Taiwan.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said on Monday that it’s regrettable Belarus has long curried favor with China at the expense of Taiwan. The foreign ministry said Belarus has turned a blind eye to the reality in the international community.
The ministry also said Taiwan is a democracy and it has every right to apply for membership in international organizations.
Taiwan set up a representative office in Belarus following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. But the office was closed in 2005 because it had few affairs to attend to.
