President Ma Ying-jeou says the 1992 Consensus is conducive to peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait. Ma was speaking Tuesday during his meeting with Taiwanese businessmen based in Malaysia.
Ma said ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu just ended a successful trip to China. During the trip, both the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC) insisted on conducting cross-strait exchanges based on the 1992 Consensus.
The consensus refers to a tacit agreement the two sides reached in 1992. Under that agreement, there is only one China, although each side may have its own interpretation of what that means.
Ma said Taiwan and China should work together to pursue peace.
"I am sure that Taiwan and China will be able to find a way to pursue peace and prosperity," said Ma.
"As a matter of fact, the 1992 Consensus that we uphold is moving towards that direction. During Chu’s trip, that principle was reinforced. We should all cherish the principle, not deviate from it.”
The president said confrontations across the Taiwan Strait would be a lose-lose situation.
