Taiwan has decided to implement its new rules on food imports from Japan on May 15. That’s the word from Cabinet spokesman Sun Lih-chyun on Tuesday. Sun said the government has decided to take strict measures for the sake of food safety.
Taiwan has banned imports of food from five Japanese prefectures affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster since 2011. New rules set to go into effect May 15 would require food products to bear a certificate specifying place of origin, and for some, a radiation testing certificate.
Japanese Diet member Nobuo Kishi was in Taiwan recently and had hoped Taiwan would abandon the measures.
Meanwhile, the Interchange Association (Japan), Taipei Office said Japan maintains that its foods are all safe.
