Chu responds to “one China”; Tsai weighs in on forum
Chu meets with Taiwanese businesspeople

KMT Chairman Eric Chu spoke about the concept of “one China” on Sunday, following a speech in Shanghai earlier in the day.

At the opening of a forum between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Communist Party of China (CPC), Chu said his party hopes to strengthen cross-strait exchanges under the framework of the ’92 Consensus.

The “’92 Consensus” refers to a tacit agreement between the two sides in 1992. Under the agreement, both sides agree there is only one China although each side may have its own interpretation of what that means.

When asked about “one China” on Sunday, Chu said it was a case of the two sides seeking commonalities, and respecting differences. When asked whether he would mention the Republic of China when meeting with Chinese leader and CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping on Monday, Chu said that he would speak about tomorrow’s issues when tomorrow comes.

Meanwhile, the head of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen has weighed in on Chu’s China trip. She called on Chu to keep the nation's best interests at heart, saying that cross-strait ties are not between the KMT and the CPC, and that the development of cross-strait ties should not be dominated by the two parties.
