Taiwan is calling on China and Japan to set aside their territorial conflict in the East China Sea and support the East China Sea Peace Initiative.
Lo Koon-tsan, a foreign ministry official in charge of relations with Japan, issued the call on Thursday. Lo was responding to a recent announcement that the United States and Japan are to revise the guidelines governing their defense relationship. Lo said that the US-Japan alliance will help safeguard the stability of the Asia-Pacific region. But he also urged all sides to support the East China Sea Peace Initiative.
The initiative was proposed by President Ma Ying-jeou in 2012. It calls for all parties with claims in the area to find peaceful solutions to disputes and develop the area’s natural resources jointly.
