Joint fight against crime across the Taiwan Strait effective: Ma

President Ma Ying-jeou says the joint fight against crime across the Taiwan Strait has been effective. Ma was speaking Friday at an event marking the 6th anniversary of the mutual judicial assistance agreement that Taiwan signed with China. The agreement came into effect in June of 2009.

Ma said 81% of the more than 67,000 jointly handled cases led to successful results, a record which is rarely seen in the world. Ma also said there has been tremendous progress in the joint fight against drugs, phone scams and criminal arrests.

The president called on the justice ministry and the Mainland Affairs Council to keep up with the good work.

"You need to allow the public to know that peaceful cross-strait relations will bring not only economic benefits, but also social benefits and more effective crime fighting," said Ma.

The president also demanded that related government agencies work hard to bring most wanted white-collar criminals back from China.
