Southern Taiwan to see stricter water rationing starting May 4

Water rationing will tighten in the southern city of Kaohsiung in early May due to a prolonged drought. That’s the word from a drought emergency response task force under the economics ministry on Friday.

The supply of tap water to households will be cut completely two days a week on a rotational basis starting from May 4. The measure will affect more than 2.5 million people and will help save 170,500 cubic meters of water per day.

As Taiwan continues to battle its worst drought in decades, the same water rationing measures were imposed for the first time on Apr. 8 in parts of northern Taiwan.

The water rationing measures currently in place in southern Taiwan involves reducing water pressure at night and restricting water supply to consumers who use more than 1,000 cubic meters per month. Daily water supplies to industrial users in the area have also been cut by 10%.
