Premier Mao Chi-kuo has instructed the cabinet to set up a coordinating committee on immigrant affairs.
Mao issued the instruction on Wednesday after hearing a report on providing education to immigrants and their children.
Taiwan is now home to 500,000 immigrants. Most of these come from Southeast Asian countries. There are now more than 200,000 second-generation Taiwanese with at least one immigrant parent.
Mao said the government must take protecting the rights of these immigrants and their children seriously. He also said the government must also develop the talents of these immigrants and second-generation Taiwanese.
The new committee will coordinate between different government agencies working on immigrant affairs issues.
