Italy’s Chamber of Deputies has passed a bill designed to prevent double taxation with Taiwan. The bill’s passage on Wednesday marks the first time that Italy’s parliament has passed any bills regarding the country’s unofficial relationship with Taiwan.
The bill had been on the table through three sessions of parliament before finally passing by a large majority on Wednesday.
Taiwan’s representative to Italy, Stanley Kao, said that there has been an increase in bilateral trade between Taiwan and Italy in recent years. Kao said small- and medium-sized enterprises on both sides have been eager to see the bill pass.
Italy is Taiwan’s fourth largest trading partner in Europe. Kao said that the legislation is expected to strengthen economic relations between the two sides.
