Record low temperatures on Jade and Hehuan mountains

It’s already April, but the cold front from China is still coming on strong. Taiwan saw record low temperatures at Jade Mountain and Hehuan Mountain on Tuesday.

At 5:40 am, the thermometer hit -10.1 degrees Celsius at Jade Mountain, or Yushan. That’s the lowest April temperature since 1943. The Central Weather Bureau said the last time the April record was broken was in 1968 at -9.8 degrees Celsius.

Jade Mountain has the highest peak in Taiwan at 3,952 meters (12,966 ft) above sea level and is one of the most popular mountains for hikers.

Hehuan Mountain also set a new record at 8am on Tuesday at -11 degrees Celsius. Hehuan Mountain is a 3,416 meters (11,207 ft) high mountain in Central Taiwan.

Taiwan has the highest density of mountains in the world. It has 286 mountain peaks over 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) above sea level.
