Taichung mayor proposes 5 ways to boost safety following accident
Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung

The Taichung City Government on Sunday held a second meeting to discuss boosting safety on the construction of the city’s first metro line. That was following an accident on Friday which killed four people and injured four others.

Officials suspended construction work on the line after a steel girder fell from a height of about three stories onto a busy road, crushing a motorist in her car and killing three workers.

A preliminary investigation determined that “human error” was the cause of the accident.

At Sunday’s meeting, Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung proposed five ways of improving safety. Those include: increasing fines, strengthening audits, holding contract negotiations, conducting labor inspections, and reporting on punishment reviews.

Lin is set to make a report on the situation at a city government meeting on Monday. He said he hoped that the central government can also relax the limit set on fines, which is currently set at NT$100,000 (US$3,200). He is also looking to the government to allow for multiple fines to be levied for the same offence.
