Ma: LED lights a favorite among recipients of Taiwanese foreign aid

President Ma Ying-jeou says that Taiwan-made LED lights are favorite part of Taiwan’s foreign aid program among aid recipients. Ma was speaking Friday during a meeting with a group of scholars, including Shuji Nakamura, the inventor of LED or light-emitting diodes.

Ma said the production value of Taiwan’s LED industry is the third highest in the world after Japan and the United States. He also said that the industry has built up a comprehensive supply chain.

Taiwan is donating solar-powered and LED lights to allies in Central America and the Pacific as part of its foreign aid program.

Ma said that LED lights are quite popular on South Pacific islands.

“In recent years, LED lights have become quite popular, especially in the Pacific island countries," said Ma.

"It is impossible for a country with scores or hundreds of islets to build a power plant on every islet. Therefore, solar-powered and LED lights have become the most popular equipment in foreign aid programs.”

The president also said he hopes Taiwan’s photovoltaic industry will further boost Taiwan’s economic development.
