Chairperson of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen says that her party’s cross-strait policy aims to maintain the status quo. Tsai was speaking on Friday.
Tsai said all of Taiwan’s political parties have a responsibility to ensure that cross-strait relations benefit the Taiwanese people. Tsai also mentioned an upcoming meeting between members of the ruling KMT and officials from the Communist Party of China, saying that cross-strait relations are not party-to-party relations.
Tsai rejected KMT claims that her party’s China policy is excessively vague, saying that DPP policy is to maintain a peaceful and stable cross-strait relationship.
Tsai Ing-wen announced in February that she will be running as the DPP’s presidential candidate in 2016. Her nomination is all but assured, as she is the only potential DPP candidate to step forward so far.
